Artist Natalie Baxter works in sewn, quilted, and stuffed forms to create biting social commentary. Although she is most famous for her Warm Gun collection of various quilted and stuffed assault weapons, I’m most fond of ALT CAPS. In this collection, Baxter takes hateful comments left on an article about her work, and turns them into fabulous, flamboyant works of art. Not to mention, her improv quilts are a delight.
In her own words, Baxter:
explores concepts of place-identity, nostalgic americana, and gender stereotypes through sculpture and video. Baxter’s work playfully pushes controversial issues, creating an accessible entry point for unpacking matters of tension in today’s political and social landscape.
